First of all, I'd like to say that Sony really should put more thought into who they send to represent them in America. Granted, it's easier for me to understand what they're saying than most people, but some people aren't going to know what a 'praystation sree' is, if you get my meaning. ;)

I mean hell, I had an easier time understanding Hideo Kojima than I did that one Sony tech guy, and Kojima-san was actually speaking Japanese!

Okay, now on to the real stuff.

The hardware is most definitely the pinnacle of human technology, no shit. The processing power and graphics capibilities are just insane. And all the funtionality and possibilities just blow me away. And wtf? wireless controllers out of the box?! I just hope they make 'normal' dual-shock style wireless controllers too...those boomerang things look like shit. :(

All the game videos they showed were incredible, some perhaps too incredible. Of course, I'm talking about KILLZONE. Yeah, that KILLZONE video has to be bullshit. There's just NO WAY IN HELL that even the PS3 can do that. And if it can, then that means the company behind KZ are the only people really working the hardware.

Wada-san has to be lying about there being no plans to remake FFVII. Granted, when the N64 was coming out, they did a techdemo showing 3d models of characters from FFVI, and there was no subsequent game, but there's been plans to remake all the Playstation Final Fantasy games for years now. Besides, did you see the grin he had when he said that? :P FFVII was probably the worst-looking FF game since they moved off the Famicom, just because it was an early game on an emerging system.

Heavenly Sword (The one with the redhaired chick vs billions of badguys) looks like it'd be hella fun to play, if the actual gameplay is anything like what we saw.

EYEDentify looks interesting. Kinda like lifeline without the suck, hopefully. If any of that was real, looks like you play 'tech support' for a couple of secret agent-type anime hotties....using the EYEToy camera (Or the new high-def camera)

It's fairly rare that Best Buy lives up to the promise of its name, due mostly to the fact that it's a retail store. But this was one of those times. I saw a post on the AnandTech Hot Deals board, about a deal on PC games at BB. So I checked it out.

Not much selection... Chronicles of Riddick Dev Cut, JointOps, Tribes:V, and some random Vietnam war FPS. But the price was right. $19.99, buy one get one, free shipping. So, for $19.99 + $1.20 tax, I got JO and Tribes. When they arrived, they still had the pricetags on them. JO was $39.99 and Tribes was $49.99. Now that I think about it though, I should've gotten 2 copies of JO... I opened Tribes (probably shouldn't have) but really doubt I'm going to play it now that I've seen what the non-demo JO is like.

Battle Royale is CURSED!

I swear to god, Battle Royale and I are cursed. I see a pattern developing... Last time it was just a phonecall... This time it was a door-to-door solicitation... I'm watching BR, and there's a knock at the door. I figure you know, who the fuck is it gonna be but one of my friends or something... So I don't bother turning it down or anything. It's a pair of mormons, wanting to talk to me about their wonderful religion... =___=

The edge of my DLP's projection, is like 14 inches from the door, so there I am standing there in the doorway, and there's Japanese schoolkids brutally murdering eachother like a foot from my face. At that point, it became hard to concentrate on wtf the two mormons were saying.

I wish to hell the place was clean...I would've invited them in. THAT would have been fun. There's so many opportunities for hilarity at that point.

1. They see Japanese schoolkids brutally murdering eachother in life-size.

2. Even if I wasn't watching BR, I could have pointed to the DLP and said "THAT is the only god I worship."

3. If the place was clean and our little 'renovations' were finished, I could have gone "BEHOLD THE REWARDS OF BEING A GODLESS HEATHEN! NOTE THEM WELL, FOOLS!!"

Anyway, missed opportunities... But just standing there listening to them go on about JC while I've got mayhem and death going on to one side of my head was enough. ^___^

Aural Stimulation

05/19/05 @ 08:20:01 pm, Categories: Uncategorized, 176 words, 581 views

Well, UPS dropped off my new surround system. A Sony STR-DE697. I went with that instead of the 897 or 997 because the only extra functions they have are more wattage (I have more than enough), a more featureful remote (I want to get a nice LCD remote anyway), upsampling from s-video and composite, to component output. (Who the fuck needs that? I've got a ten foot television, you can bet your ass I don't watch blurry low-def crap on it.)

So, for $214, it was the best choice.

I'm using it with the speakers that came with my old RCA Prologic surround system, and even with those old speakers, the difference is...well, it's more than 'night and day'...it's like I've been listening to everything in mono until now. And that's just normal DD 5.1 I'm talking about. This is a 7.1 system and can do DTS.

DTS... Well, DTS is aural stimulation at its best. It's like masturbation for your ears. ;p

The next step is to get some new speakers. Such as Sony's SA-VE367T 7.1 speaker set.

At 1am, I awoke to the sound of half a dozen people running up the stairs, one falling, hitting his head, and spending the next five minutes on the floor moaning about his head, before his NEXT great idea....

His next great idea? STAIRSLEDDING.

"Hey, someone..... Someone? Can someone help me with my sled?!" "*Someone else, indistinct*" "No, heh...I'm gonna hurt myself." Moments later *SSSHHHHHH-DU-DU-DU-DU-DU-DU-DU-DUDUDUDU--THUD!!!*

Then he did it AGAIN.

Until that moment, I was unaware that Middlebury College had a special ed program...

Now I know.

An open letter to the American anime licensee community.

I, Baka-chan, am sick and tired of wasting money on poorly made American-licensed anime.

My grievances are as follows:

  • Disc space is not used in an efficient manner. If you're going to insist on cramming 4 episodes on a disc, USE THE WHOLE DISC. (See: Example 1)
  • I don't want an English dub. Why can't I get my DVDs sooner/cheaper? English dubs are almost always crap. I have no interest in listening to them. I would only accept responsibility for subsidizing their production if they were done better. Find better voiceactors. I know they're out there. I've actually heard them work on anime before. A big shout-out to Luci and Jessica for their awesome dub work on Abenobashi. You carry the hopes and dreams of a generation of American anime fans! ;)
  • Sometimes your translations are just crap. I don't rely on subtitles under most circumstances, except maybe Koukaku Kidoutai...because who the hell can follow all that socio-political blather? But my friends have to be subjected to whatever you deem a decent translation. I'm not just talking about poor translation...this is also related to the next point. In the last 6 months, there's been a massive surge in the fansubbing of Japanese DVDs. By that I mean adding subtitles to the DVD, and posting the images for download. In some cases these are better than your retail products. You might want to see to that if you expect people to pay for said products.
  • Censorship has no place in this industry. The characters say what they say. No helping that. Don't smooth over what they say to be PC or some crap like that. Also, DO NOT make up 'explanation dialogue' in the subs. If people don't understand certain aspects of Japanese culture, they SHOULDN'T be able to understand what people are talking about. If you want to fix that, add pop-ups like the Abenobashi DVDs have. Even -I- found them useful. (It was hard enough fallowing the Kansai-ben to begin with.) Speaking of Osaka-jin, 'translating' all of Osaka's jokes so they'd play better for Americans is a crime. The stuff she says is just hilarious no matter what culture you're from! Azumanga Daioh would have been another perfect candidate for those popups.
  • Screwing around with the original artistic vision should be considered a criminal act not unlike rape. I'm generally okay with English credits, if they don't detract from the original artwork. The Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum Edition is an instance where it's not okay. I've seen the Japanese opening. Big beautiful kanji. You couldn't reproduce that in English without it being terribly ugly. But that's just a minor complaint. What is NOT a minor complaint, is what ADV did to the opening of RahXephon episode 1. I think it goes without saying that if you have to BLUR OUT large portions of the screen to accomplish something, you SHOULDN'T BE DOING IT. I'm not nitpicky enough to really complain about the Cowboy Bebop opening, even though I REALLY loved the way they did the typefaces on the original. But I'm not just talking about the op/ed... Do NOT change a GODDAMN thing. I don't care if you can't sell the DVD in retail stores because of the content, if you didn't want to deal with it you shouldn't have licensed the show. Do not change things, do not omit things, I expect to at the very least, find EVERYTHING that's on the Japanese DVDs on the DVD I'm paying my hard earned money for. That's right, MY hard-earned money. YOU need to earn it. You don't just automatically get it because you're the only show in town. -I- wakaru the nihongo, assholes.
  • Quality Control. In the last year and a half, we've had two complete screwups. The original Innocence DVDs shipped with no English subtitles, but instead only included a Closed Caption track. And the RahXephon movie shipped with Japanese audio only coming from one side for half the movie. As it is, I bet I won't be able to buy EITHER of these from Amazon without having a 75% chance of getting one of the old ones. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. This isn't software we're talking about, it's a DVD VIDEO!

Example 1
I grudgingly buy all of the Ghost in The Shell Stand Alone Complex DVDs, in their 'limited edition' form. Though, when I compare them to the Japanese DVDs, I honestly wonder why I'm even paying for them.

GiTS SAC Volume 1, American DVD, 4 episodes, 6.3 gigabytes
GiTS SAC 2nd GiG Volume 1, Japanese DVD, 2 episodes, 7.4 gigabytes

Before anyone says I'm full of shit if I can see a difference, I shall remind you that I have a 10-foot HDTV, and a player that upsamples to 1080i. You CAN tell the difference. You CAN see the compression noise and color banding.

These Digital Versatile Discs have a maximum capacity of 8.5 gigabytes. Why, in the name of all things holy and anime, does a four episode disc use less of that than a TWO episode disc? I want my money back. Keep your translation, I need to work on my Japanese anyway.

Kanchou! Renpou-gun no mobiiru suutsu desu!

MS igLoo: The Hidden One Year War is in no small way the greatest thing since Minovsky particles.

I've had the privilage of seeing the first two episodes on DVD. They're nothing short of awesome. The third, is the one that really interests me. In the trailer on the official site, you see Oliver May on the bridge of the Joutenheim yelling "Kanchou! Renpou-gun no mobiiru suutsu desu!" and then we see a handful of RGM-78s drop into frame.

From an historical standpoint, man...that's something. Remember, up until November 0079 the Federation didn't have any mobile suits other than what was on White Base. (Unless you count Balls, but really, who does?) With the exception of the RX-78-4 that they were playing with (After rebuilding it) that later got turned into the Alex from War in The Pocket.

After Amuro brings the Gundam back to Jaburo/Jabrow/Whatever you want to call it, they take the pilot data and begin designing and mass producing the GM, as well as, I'd imagine, the GM and Gundam Ground-Type suits as seen in 08th MS Shoutai. (That's the only part I'm not sure about, as I haven't seen mention of the Ground-Type feddie mobile suits outside of 08th MST)

Thus ends my overt display of geek bravado for the week.

I'm on the move...I had to do this from the college computer lab... I think Bandai is on to my plan to expose them! They've sent ninjas... I don't know how long I can evade them, so...my best bet is to just get the information out there! If you get this, spread the word. Pass on this information. If enough people know, they won't be able to do anything about it! If you don't fear death at the hands of ninjas, continue on, and let the truth be known to you.

Bandai has been lying to you about the existence of new UC Gundam properties. The truth was left on my doorstep last night in a paper DVD sleeve.

The DVD was a featureless DVD-r disc of Ritek manufacture, G04 model.

What the disc contained...was the answer to every true Gundam fan's wishes regarding the franchise. After viewing the DVD in stunned silence, I examined the sleeve more closely for clues... Written inside the sleeve in fat black marker, were two words: SIEG ZEON

First off, OMFG! I can't even afford FOOD, but here I am going "Man, if I had $40, I'd walk to Burlington on the 14th to see Lewis Black..." *cries*

Also, quite importantly, "LightWave [8] version 8.3 has completed rigorous beta testing, and is stable." -Lightwave3d.com

Okay, I haven't been making much progress lately, but I've had a lot of other stuff to deal with, I should have more time to devote now, and everything is getting back to normal.

If anyone's wondering, the title of today's post is the last line in Ajikan's 'Last Scene' off their latest album 'Sol-Fa'. Something like "The sky becomes so clear that everything melts". Anyway, love the song, love the album, and Asian Kung-Fu Generation just owns.
