Code Geass R2 - Standing By

Okay, so I completely forgot about Code Geass this morning, I was wrapped up in everything else I was doing last night that I went to bed at a normal human hour and slept soundly through till morning. I’m downloading the raw 720p copy right now, and should have opportunity to watch it shortly… As to what had me so distracted… Well, I’ll get to that.

Code Geass R2 - Turn 06

05/12/08 @ 06:48:34 am, Categories: Baka-chan on Anime, 335 words, 1141 views

Wow. Both the stream AND KeyHole TV took turns shitting themselves as we all tried to watch the live stream of Geass… And now I’m hearing that there’s problems with sourcing raws, because some cappers got arrested or something… Jeez.

Anyway, last week ended with Lelouch in a pretty goddamn tight spot… You’ll never believe who ends up saving his ass. (Well, okay, you might. I guessed it too.)

So, Nunnally is now the new Governor-General of Area 11. The Black Knights stage an attack on the airship carrying her to the Tokyo settlement in the hopes that Zero can ‘rescue’ her.

Kallen’s Guren Mk.II gets a badass (If perhaps over-the-top) field upgrade when things start going all kinds of fuck-ways. Senba purchases the proverbial agricultural property… Leaving only the girl (Chiba?) and the scar-faced kid with glasses, as the remaining members of Senba’s squad. Lelouch/Zero fail on a very basic level to accomplish the mission when he hesitates in the presence of Nunnally, and Suzaku ‘rescues’ her from Zero… But really, what was Lelouch going to do? I mean, he killed and/or suicided like a dozen people in just the last several minutes! Is it going to dawn on him that Zero, and thereby, HIMSELF are not compatible with the world that Nunnally wants to create?

No conversation which starts with “So, sis… Uhm, I’m secretly Zero… And I killed hundreds of people, including a couple of our siblings in an effort to create this peaceful world you wanted…” ends well. I feel this is a fundamental flaw in the character… I mean, he’s an incredible strategist and stuff, but he can’t think far enough ahead to see that? Then again, he does seem to be heading towards becoming completely BATSHIT INSANE, so maybe he just doesn’t know the difference anymore?

Kinda makes you understand the Emperor’s response to V.V.’s assertion that he’s naive for not telling Nunnally the identity of Zero, doesn’t it? Because this shit basically PARALYZES Lelouch.

Code Geass R2 - Turn 05

These just keep getting later and later don’t they? There was no mms simulcast stream this week, so I had to watch it via KeyHole TV, which has really lousy motion video algorithms or something…

Anyway, the 256 captive members of The Order of The Black Knights have been rescued. Toudou and Ougi stand by Zero, allaying much of the resentment some members felt due to the actions of Zero at the end of the Black Rebellion. This episode has a lot of fan service, but in general it’s about tying up loose ends, so I expect the story to start moving a lot faster soon. Suzaku returned to school and is obviously at odds with Lelouch, what he does at the end of the episode is way below the belt though… I mean, shit! But seriously, he knows better than anyone how crafty and duplicitous Lelouch is, so he had to make absolutely certain… But wow. I can’t wait to see how that goes at the beginning of the next episode.

Code Geass R2 - Turn 04

Sorry for the lateness, I again watched Geass R2 live on TBS, but I’ve been too busy to post…

Man. Turn 03 ended with a “Oh how the fuck is Lelouch going to get out of THIS one?” and I must say, I’m impressed. It was another awesome episode, with the first serious action of the series. And Lelouch proves once again that he’s just a little fucking twisted and crazy.

Also, I’d like to note that raws are coming out in 1080p (Compressed. 1440 vertical lines instead of 1920) captured from D-TBS and MBS. Keep an eye out, they don’t seem to be upsamples.

Yeah, that was basically my reaction too.

Another great and highly revealing episode of Geass… We learn a bit about Rolo/Lolo/wtf, as well as what the deal is with Viletta. Also… Can anyone say ‘ZA WARUDO’? D: We get a little more exposition as to why Lelouch is able to live like everything’s normal again, and later he pulls some serious Bourne-level shit in a shopping mall, haha. Also… The actions of the Chinese federation are confusing the SHIT out of me…

Geass R2 supplemental

Just finished watching episode 2 on TBS… A lot of surprises and shit’s getting complicated. We find out what happened at the end of the first season… I was only half-wrong about what happened…but I won’t spoil it. The twist at the end I saw coming like ten minutes beforehand…but then it twisted FURTHER. Holy Capn’s Christmas Crunch!

Well, just watched the Code GEASS R2 premiere on TBS live, thanks to some folks willing to stream it. I must say, the first bit was confusing… But it quickly got back to awesome. The Op sucks though, some song by Orange Range that sounds in no way epic or serious. The Ed is passable, and might grow on me, but isn’t up the standard set by the previous Ed songs.

Torrents of raws are up. I recommend this one: [IZ] Code Geass - Lelouche of the Rebellion R2 - 01 RAW (DivX6.8 1280x720).avi

These Hi-Vision raws from D-TBS look better than the Japanese DVDs for the first season! My god. Also, while I said the Op sucked, that was just from my first viewing… After listening a couple more times and letting it sink in, it does indeed seem to be growing on me. Turns out the Ed is Orange Range, too. Anyway, it was great, and this season is going to be great.

The Week of a Thousand Things - Part 2

So, a recent alliance between the GPMoD and a secret society that stands against evil in all its forms (Especially stupidity) Has spawned the idea of doing a 2D fighting game with characters based on our online personas and our respective communities’ in-jokes. I’ll have more to say about this project at a later date.

I really need to catch up on my anime… I haven’t finished Minami-ke or Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei, and now Minami-ke Okawari! and Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei are airing… Gundam 00 still sucks. Code Geass doesn’t return until April. The only thing I’m staying current on is Kaiji. I’ve been watching Triad’s subs with my father. He really liked Akagi… Kaiji doesn’t seem to appeal to him as much, but he still likes it.

Also, Evangelion 1.0 is the greatest thing to ever happen to the franchise, and perhaps anime in-general…but I’ll talk more about that in another post. (I swear to fucking GOD, I want to go to Japan just to SEE it in the theater!) It doesn’t come out on DVD and Blu-ray until late April… I have plans to make that my first hi-def purchase… And then I will write a fansub script for it. One that is in no way based on the original US translations… A completely new reinterpretation of the dialogue based on intense study of the background and mythos of Shin Seiki Evangelion, (This from someone who named their computers ZEROGOKI, SHOGOKI, and NIGOKI, on workgroup EVANGELION, hooked up with Blue, Purple, and Red ethernet cables…) and conforming to an ideal of ‘accurate translation at any cost’. People don’t know what the fuck is going on? Tough shit, you obviously don’t know something that you’re SUPPOSED to know. Read a fucking book.

I am serious about this. I am sick of all these half-assed translations on OFFICIAL DVDS, and ADVs crap releases. I am going to do this, and deliver them the goddamn script with the warning that if they alienate the intended demographic for EVA 1.0 with a shit sub, there is little doubt they will lose 90% of all sales of the movie to hi-def rips of it on bittorrent. They need to learn once and for all.

    GOD’S IN

Kamichu! is a fun feel-good series about a middle-school girl named Hitotsubashi Yurie, who discovers that she has become a god. (Or 'kami', in the Shinto sense.) The series is deeply rooted in Shinto beliefs, with every thing and every place having its own 'kami' and this world of gods invisibly affecting the lives of people.

The series aired in 2004, and I somehow never saw any of it. It is now, with the release of Volume 3, nearly released in its entirety in the US by Geneon Entertainment. (Still no word on whether they're going to release the 720p versions that aired in Japan on either next-gen DVD format.)

I like the music and the art. The animation is very well executed. The story is fun and a definite change of pace from some of the other things I've been watching lately. It gets the nod as a 'Baka-chan Approved' anime. Whether or not you understand some of the more subtle humor, you'll enjoy this series.

Some Trivia!
The town the series takes place in is a faithfully reproduced version of the very real town of Onomichi, located in Hiroshima Prefecture.

There's a lot of fun with names and kanji going on here. First of all, the Saegusa family doesn't seem very imaginative... They run the local shrine, and named their two daughters Matsuri and Miko? (For the uninitiated, Matsuri means 'festival', the kind of thing that is typically a function of local shrines. And Miko means 'shrine maiden'.)

In one of the early episodes, Kenji calls Yurie 'Ichihashi', and she remarks to Matsuri and Mitsue that he finally remembered her name. ('Hitotsubashi'.) Now, from his perspective as a calligrapher, he did. They're both written with the same kanji... ^^;

Some more name fun... The first kanji of the family names of the four main characters, Hitotsubashi Yurie (一橋 ゆりえ), Ninomiya Kenji (二宮 健児), Saegusa Matsuri (三枝 祀), and Shijyo Mitsue (四条 光恵), are the kanji for one, two, three, and four, respectively. (一, 二, 三, 四)
